We have a new volunteer in the branch since a couple of weeks ago.
He realized he wanted to volunteer at the library since
he was already here most days it is open.
He admitted his concern about
applying for this position
due to his indigent status.
Upon his clearance,
he works 6.0-8.0 hours a day and
takes pride in keeping
the book carts empty and
items on the shelves.
His work performance is strong.
The other James talks to me frequently about
Korean and Japanese history.
He tells really bad racial jokes like
“What do you call a fat chink? Chunk.”
He has a son who is a rocket scientist who is away at school.
He eats pizza slices when we have staff retirement parties.
He is really smart and gives staff chocolate bars as Christmas gifts.
He is the second James who frequents the library and
lives outdoors by choice.
Jim is clean and smells like talc.
He has a BS in Forestry from Wisconsin.
He has a favorite spot in Oceanside where he camps.
He especially likes the movie nights when we make and serve popcorn.
When we found out about his outdoor situation,
there came an offer of a complimentary week’s stay
at the Leucadia Motel for when
the rains come again and the weather worsens.
He accepted the generous offer with that caveat,
with a rain check all pun intended.
He prefers to live outdoors.
I realized that some people
choose the outdoors
instead of other people.
People come with rules and
wishes for your “well being”
restrictions and reciprocations
and less stable than
the ground that connects us from here to there.
I don’t know if he will take us up on our offer of motel nights.
I don’t know if he will apply for jobs in the near future.
I don’t know if he will iron his shirt in the staff lounge
the morning of his next job interview.
‘cos he wasn’t able to volunteer in this capacity while
and when he was working full time.
He really likes us and being in the library.
